Within hours of harvest, the grapes are transported and crushed under our careful supervision. Winemakers monitor the grapes throughout the "open top" fermentation process and then places the young wine in French and American oak barrels for aging. When the flavors of fruit and oak are well integrated, barrel aging is complete and the wine is bottled.

Award-winning international winemaker Kerry Damskey began making our wines with the 2003 harvest. Kerry's philosophy is that the winemaker is merely the "midwife" in the process of winemaking. "It's the winemaker's job to articulate a definable style for a wine, but you don't create an identity - that must come from the grapes."

Joining us in 2010 is acclaimed winemaker Rolando Herrera. His 20+ year career in winemaking has been a journey working with some of the most exciting wines: 10 years at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, the last 7 years as Cellar Master, Assistant Winemaker Chateau Potelle, Winemaker at Vine Cliff Winery, Director of Winemaking at Paul Hobbs Consulting, and now owner of Mi Sueño Winery. Hughes Family Vineyards is enormously pleased to be working with Rolando and thrilled to have him bringing out the absolute best in the grapes we grow.
