Sitting atop a flowing ten acre hillside bordered by the Yulupa creek and adjacent to a basalt rock quarry where cobble stones were once mined for the streets of San Francisco, our Savannah Vineyard faces south/southeast and shares the exceptional volcanic soils and unique microclimate of the adjacent Wild Turkey vineyard.
Six unique blocks comprise this vineyard and range from a low lying sunny meadow area to a steep, rocky hillside. Planted in 1999, the nine acre vineyard contains 8,600 vines. Here both the Syrah Alba clone grafted to rootstock 3309 and the Syrah174RS clone grafted to rootstock 110 are used to match the varying demands of the vineyard.
Our Syrah grows in a trellis framework with three wires that spread the vines out as they grow to maximize exposure to the sun and create corridors for the evening breezes to gently ripen the fruit.
